Why do I need a headshot? The question really is: Can you afford not to have one?

Why do I need a headshot? The question really is: Can you afford not to have one?

A few questions for you: Are you using a picture you took of yourself (the dreaded selfie), or one a friend took at a BBQ? Is your headshot out of date with an old hairstyle or colour? Have you changed jobs, or started a new business? If you answer yes to any of those, it might be time for a new Headshot.

Having a good headshot is not so much about you. It’s about the people who see it.

A great, professional headshot will show them that you care enough about them to have a good headshot done. That you care enough about your career, business, product, service to put your best foot forward. It shows that you respect them enough to put some effort into your appearance and the way you present yourself, and that you will take the same amount of care in the way you deal with them.

Having a good headshot is an exercise in Brand Management and PR. We all know how badly those are done these days... why be a part of that? Do it right, get it done and forget about it. A good headshot will give you peace of mind in your online and social media dealings for the next 2-3 years.

Communication is mostly non-verbal and subconscious. We get more from a headshot online than we do for the rest of the profile and this is true no matter what industry you’re in. The more professional and approachable your headshot is, the more positive  the viewer will perceive you, the more likely they will be to engage with you... which is the whole idea. Don’t let a bad or inappropriate headshot derail your efforts... get it done... forget about it... let it do the work for you.

With the whole world going digital and constantly online, there is a good chance that people, clients, bosses, managers, and potential dates will meet you for the first time online... that really puts pressure on your profile to get noticed. If you have an old or outdated picture as your first meeting with someone new, your chances of leaving a good impression are drastically reduced. It’s like showing up to an Interview... in your PJ’s.

So, a good headshot will:

  • Show you care about the details

  • Imply confidence in your ability and personality

  • Put you in a positive light

  • Create professionalism in your profile

  • Show something of your personality

  • Create an opportunity to be noticed in sea of clutter

  • Create an opportunity to show consistency, which is key to developing trust.

You’ll notice that none of this has anything to do with specific careers or jobs. It doesn’t matter who you are, or what you do, a good headshot WILL improve your confidence, your professionalism, your impact on others, your chances of being noticed, your ability to influence and persuade, and the chance of you actually leaving an impression online... where 4.9 million other people are trying to do the same thing... with terrible headshots... If you have a good one... you’re already ahead of the game.
