10 Common Myths about Headshots
As a professional headshot photographer, I've heard it all! Hundreds of myths around headshots; what they are, who needs them, who doesn't and why and many more. Today I wanted to give you a little insight into what a headshot is and isn't, as well as dispel some of the myths around what I do and how it can help you.
I thought I'd break it down into the top 10 myths I hear all the time and my thoughts on them. If you have any comments or questions, please hit us up on our socials or send us an email, we'd love to hear from you! Lets jump right in with the top myth i hear when talking to clients and friends: Only actors need headshots!
This is the big one. We hear this all the time from clients and friends and I really need to get this one straight. While it's true that actors need amazing headshots, it doesn't stop there! A great headshot can change lives. Actors, executives, entrepreneurs, and everyone in-between can benefit from a great headshot. It gives confidence, drives marketing and sales and can really engage an audience no matter what or who that audience is. A great headshot becomes a marketing asset that does a number of things for those that use them well...not just actors.
That totally depends on what you define as expensive. With us, a standard headshot session will cost you less than $1 per day of use...if you use the image for only 1 year...but you also get 3 images with your shoot, so if you only use them for 12 months, they'll cost you less than 30c per day. What else will propel your brand, convert your audience and get you noticed for that? If only 1 key person in your network notices you, your headshot would've paid for itself. Headshots, or any professional creative service is not expensive. Most of them create valuable assets for your business, your career, and your life. I guess it comes down to how valuable they are TO YOU. What's your next big break worth to you? Headshots, are at the very least, an investment into yourself, like getting a new website or a new suit or a new office. All these things have value, tangible or not. Don't neglect your personal brand, it's as important as anything else you do and far cheaper!
About 80% of all our first interactions with new people are online these days, that means most of the new people we meet see our online profiles first...which is your headshot. So it really doesn't matter what you do, you need a headshot that you're in control of and that speaks about you in your own words. Having a great headshot also says that you care enough to have it done...it's a powerful tool for anyone! Using a professional headshot will make you more approachable, look more confident, and will tell a story about you before you ever have to open your mouth, it's also much more effective than just a website...still think you don't need one?
What if I told you you're perfect right now? You'll never be more you than the you you are at this moment. Many of our clients feel like they don't look good enough to get a stunning professional headshot done. Like they need to wait to grow their hair, loose some weight, get better clothes. All these reasons can totally make you feel like now is not the right time, we get it. Headshots are intimate things and can be very scary to have done but if you take the risk and back yourself, I promise it will be worth it and you'll absolutely have a set of images you'll love and will use everywhere. We tailor our approach to each individual to make sure you're comfortable, confident and in total control. We will work with you to make the most of your current look, the you you are today, and make you look amazing.
I don't think I've ever met anyone who didn't feel this way. Some people are naturals when it comes to looking good in photos but I guarantee you, not everyone is that lucky, yours truly included. About 2% of my clients can be described as total naturals, the rest are all just normal people like you and me. We need professional coaching and advice to look that good. And I'll let you in on a little secret, those Hollywood A-listers we all idolise have all been coached and styled to within an inch of their lives to look that good. It's all in the coaching and I promise you, if you come in for a headshot with us, I'll make sure you nail the coaching, I'll teach you all the tricks to make sure you look your absolute best. It's a lot of fun and you'll be surprised at how easy it can be.
You'd be surprised how often this one comes up. I completely understand it though. It's very easy to take great quality images on your phone or other device these days. There are so many stunning filters and apps out there, it's very tempting to just shoot it yourself. For the most part, I think a selfie would do the trick, if it's absolutely STELLAR! Having said that, we all know how hard it is to get "that" one. There are however many cases where a selfie just doesn't cut it. Like when you're looking for a new job, looking for a promotion, trying to get a gig or to get noticed. Would you use/hire a business with a terrible logo if there are better options everywhere? It's a sad but very true fact that people will make up their minds about you in seconds based on very little info, would you risk your reputation on a selfie? Getting a professional headshot comes with specific coaching that you would not have with a selfie, that's where the magic happens!
Time, it's always against us, we never have enough of it right? Well, getting a headshot done is one of those things you should be making time for. Like getting your hair done, or doing your taxes, or meeting friends. This is one of those things that could have a major impact on your life and won't take as long as you think nor be as painful as you'd imagine. What's 60 minutes in the bigger scheme of things when you're talking about your online brand and presence? How important is it to you?
Great! So you had a set of headshots done already, that's amazing news, you probably already know how amazing they are and how much they've helped you. My question is how old are they? Was the shoot specific for you or were you only one of a larger group? How much time did you spend on the shoot? Have you changed your hair, gained weight or lost weight? Are you older now or have your goals changed? All these things can make your current headshot irrelevant or out-dated. We normally work on a 12 -18 month lifetime for a female headshot, and roughly 18-24 months for a male headshot. How old are yours again?
This one is close to my heart. I feel like this all the time and I can totally empathise with you. Standing in front of a camera is one of the top fears most people have, next to public speaking! The major benefit to having a headshot done by a professional is that we have tools and skills developed over years to help you feel comfortable and bring out the real you in a shoot setting. This is a skill that's not inherent to all photographers, so I would always recommend you pick a specialist like Boem, who've been doing this for 10 years plus with many different people and walks of life. We'll work with you for as long as it takes to make sure you feel nothing but excitement to use your new headshots.
Guys, I get it. Money is never easy to let go of, I feel ya. I want you to get value from a headshot and I promise they are worth their weight in gold if you use them right and approach the session with the right frame of mind. Think of it as an investment, into yourself and your future. Can you really put a price on that? Well to a degree you can, same as a new suit, or a stunning haircut, or a huge number of things. But what else can you spend $300 on that works for you 24/7 without you needing to do anything further? What if I told you, you could also put them on your credit card and pay them off, does that help? Ask anyone with a great headshot what it's meant to them and they'll probably tell you they are priceless...
And there you have it! Our list of top 10 headshot myths. Please take a moment to leave us your thoughts and comments, have we missed anything? Do you have a different opinion? Let's chat about it. Thanks for reading and being so cool.
All our love.
